Description
Join Bieke Depoorter for a five-day workshop in New York, which will focus on telling intimate stories through visual storytelling.
Through discussions and group critiques, you will explore working intuitively to forge deeper personal connections with your subjects. You will be encouraged to shoot from your heart, creating more meaningful images by listening to your intuition rather than trying to meet external expectations. Throughout the workshop, you will produce new work on a daily basis, with Depoorter offering continuous feedback, guidance, and support.
Over the course of five days, you will navigate and photograph New York, a city shaped by layered histories, cultures, and personal narratives. By engaging with its environments and inhabitants, you will be invited to follow your instincts and further develop your photographic language. Lectures, as well as references to photography, books, and film, will complement the creative process.
Depoorter’s intimate and immersive approach to portraiture will guide you in experimenting with proximity, trust, and storytelling. This workshop offers a space to reflect on your practice, address questions or uncertainties, and deepen the personal dimension of your work.
Participants will work as a group under Depoorter’s guidance. Each participant will create a new body of work through daily shooting exercises, and will edit and sequence their project by the end of the workshop.
“I would like us to embrace our doubts and dare to speak about them together, to collectively explore why we sometimes feel reluctant to photograph certain things, what holds us back, and what these hesitations might reveal.” Bieke Depoorter
