Workshop

Day One
Objective: Introduce participants to Myriam Boulos’ photographic approach while identifying the personal themes and visual intentions that will guide each participant throughout the workshop.

AM – Presentation by Myriam Boulos followed by the projection and discussion of participants’ work

PM – Individual Shooting Session.

Day Two
Objective: Develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between photographer and subject through questions of representation, intimacy, consent and trust.

AM – Individual Shooting Session.

PM – Review of the work produced the day before and conversation around representation, consent and trust between photographer and subject.

Day Three
Objective: Explore how personal experience and everyday environments can become part of a broader documentary and visual narrative practice.

AM – Individual Shooting Session.

PM – Review of the work produced the day before and conversation around documentary practices, visual narratives and photographing one’s environment.

Day Four
Objective: Learn how editing and sequencing shape meaning, rhythm and emotional resonance within a photographic body of work while engaging with contemporary photography through a visit to Paris Photo Fair.

AM – Visit to the Paris Photo Fair in a group and Individual Shooting Session.

PM – Review of the work produced the day before and start editing and sequencing it.

Day Five
Objective: Refine and articulate each participant’s photographic project through final editing, presentation and collective critical discussion.

AM – Final editing and preparation of participants’ series. Writing exercise: articulating intention, context and approach

PM – Group presentation and collective critique.

Myriam Boulos was born in 1992 in Lebanon. At the age of 16, she started to use her camera to get closer to reality. She graduated with a master’s degree in photography from the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts in 2015. She has taken part in both national and international collective exhibitions, including Close Enough at ICP, New York; Infinite Identities at Huis Marseille, Amsterdam; and Troisième Biennale des Photographes du Monde Arabe, at l’Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris.

Her work has been published in Aperture, FOAM, Time, GQ Middle East, Vogue Arabia, and Vanity Fair France, among other publications. In 2020, Myriam co-founded and became the photo editor of Al Hayya, a bilingual magazine that publishes literary and visual content on the works, interests and strife of women in her region. In 2021, she joined Magnum as a nominee. In 2023, her book What’s Ours was published by Aperture and she was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Fellowship.

What does the fee cover?

The fee covers the workshop itself. It does not cover accommodation, travel to the workshop location, and meals.

Can I already book my travel and accommodation?

We recommend waiting until the workshop has the minimum number of participants before booking your trip. As soon as the workshop is confirmed, we will send out an email notification, at which point you can book your trip.

Terms and Conditions

• Full fees must be paid on prior to the start of the workshop. • Magnum Photos reserves the right to cancel groups with less than 9 participants. Students will be given a full refund. In the event of cancellation, students will be given at least 3 weeks advance notice. • Magnum Photos reserves the right to change or alter the program advertised. • Cancellations: If you decide to cancel for any reason, the cancellation must be confirmed to us in writing. If you notify us at least 90 days before the first day of the Workshop, we will refund all workshop fees minus a 10% administrative fee. If you cancel between 89 and 60 days before the Workshop begins, 50% of the workshop fees will be charged. If you cancel fewer than 60 days before the Workshop begins, 100% of the workshop fees will be charged.
