Description

Join Magnum photographer Mark Power and GOST Books co-founder Stuart Smith for a two-day online workshop dedicated to editing and sequencing.

This weekend is designed to help you transform a body of work into a cohesive project, providing clear strategies for selecting and organizing images to create a meaningful dialogue on the page. Working in a group setting, you will refine your own approach and receive direct, constructive feedback on your work.

The workshop begins with two distinct lectures that draw on decades of industry experience.  Mark Power shares the knowledge gained through his own books, discussing the evolution of his projects from inception to the printed page, but with particular emphasis on sequencing. Complementing this, Stuart Smith will offer his expertise on the internal mechanics of the publishing world, exploring editing, sequencing and design influence the reading of the work. Together, they guide you through the transition of an idea from a passing thought into a tangible body of work.

Over the course of two days, you will work to narrow your edit and build a sequence that carries its own internal logic and resonance. We aim to foster an atmosphere of openness where participants are encouraged to brainstorm, experiment, and challenge conventions. This workshop is an invitation for photographers and visual artists to explore the full possibilities of the medium under the guidance of two practitioners recognized for their innovation and influence in the world of photobooks.

NB: You will be asked, in advance of the workshop, to send Mark and Stuart around 60 digitised files from which they will produce a set of small prints. You’ll then be able to watch as the pair physically move your pictures around on screen, making suggestions and offering advice. It would be beneficial if you also have your own set with you as well.

This workshop offers:

Expert Insight: Direct access to Mark Power’s experience in creating monographs and Stuart Smith’s mastery of book design and publishing.

Practical Editing: Concrete strategies to help you narrow down a large body of work into a precise, potent selection of images.

Sequence Construction: A deep dive into the relationship between pictures, focusing on how to build a rhythm and internal logic that sustains a project.

Constructive Critique: Individualized feedback on your work within a supportive group environment, designed to challenge your perspective and push your practice forward.

Publishing Perspectives: Real-world insights into the technical and aesthetic decisions involved in the photobook industry, from design choices to the realities of the market.

Collaborative Brainstorming: An open forum to experiment with ideas, test different layouts, and explore the diverse possibilities of the photographic medium.
