If Trees Could Speak is an evocative exhibition that explores the fragile yet essential dialogue between humans and trees, inviting visitors into a contemplative journey of observation, understanding, and care. At its heart lies the power of photography to illuminate the deep, often invisible bond that connects human life to the natural world.
What stories would trees tell if they could speak? Witnesses to centuries of change, they have stood quietly as civilizations emerged and vanished, as landscapes were scarred by conflict and gradually restored by time. This exhibition gives form to that imagined voice through the work of forty photographers from Magnum Photos, whose images collectively reflect on memory, resilience, and coexistence.
A distinctive feature of If Trees Could Speak is its innovative installation: for the first time, the photographs are printed on seed-infused paper. At the close of the exhibition, these prints will be planted a field in Sirmione, transforming images into living trees. This symbolic gesture completes a cycle—where art returns to nature and becomes a source of new life—turning the exhibition itself into a “garden of the future.”
Complementing the visual experience, an interactive workbench allows visitors to observe the planting process, while curated materials deepen engagement with the botanical world. Together, these elements extend the exhibition beyond representation into tangible action.
Curated by Andréa Holzherr and Mariangela Gavioli, the exhibition brings together 100 photographs spanning continents and perspectives. From the ancient baobabs of Madagascar captured by Steve McCurry to the fire-scarred landscapes documented by Paolo Pellegrin, from sacred forests seen through the lens of Abbas to the everyday urban trees observed by Martin Parr and Richard Kalvar, each image contributes to a rich, collective narrative that blends reportage, visual poetry, and environmental reflection.
The exhibition encourages visitors to slow down and listen—to recognize trees not as passive scenery, but as living presences that share our world. Their resilience, expressed through adaptability and quiet persistence, becomes a metaphor for our own survival and interdependence.
Presented by the Municipality of Sirmione, the exhibition is part of an ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, combining artistic excellence with ecological awareness. If Trees Could Speak ultimately offers not only a visual experience, but a call to reflection—urging us to reconsider our relationship with nature and to nurture the delicate balance that sustains us all.
