Description

This compelling retrospective traces the essential arc of Chilean photographer Sergio Larrain’s singular career. Born in 1931 and passing away in 2012, Larrain left behind a body of work as luminous as it is elusive—rare, poetic, and profoundly influential. A photographer of instinct and intensity, he inspired an entire generation with his quietly radical vision.

The exhibition brings together some of Larrain’s most iconic series, including haunting images of abandoned children in Santiago, as well as unforgettable scenes from London, Paris, Italy, Valparaíso, and across South America. These photographs—framed with spontaneous geometry and emotional depth—reflect his unique eye and a lifelong quest to capture the fleeting, the marginal, and the mysterious.

Drawn to the life of a wanderer and the purity of direct experience, Larrain used photography as a vehicle to engage with the world. Yet, at the height of his artistic success, he chose seclusion. He turned inward, dedicating himself to meditation, yoga, writing, and drawing. His retreat was not an escape, but a continuation of the same search for truth and clarity that animated his photographs.

Like a meteor whose trajectory was deliberately and wisely interrupted, Sergio Larrain’s career is a brilliant flash in the history of photography—brief, bold, and unforgettable.
