Watch: Martin Parr in Conversation with Bruce Gilden

Martin Parr and Bruce Gilden talk about making dynamic and energetic pictures, bad photography, and Gilden's personal inspirations

Magnum Photographers

Sofa Sessions is a video series that sees Martin Parr in conversation with photographers at the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol. Each video features an established or emerging practitioner who joins Parr to discuss their photographic process, experience and inspirations. In this episode, Parr chats to Magnum photographer Bruce Gilden.

The pair discuss how Gilden came into photography — specifically on the street, what draws his attention to his unique subjects and faces, and the understanding that is established with a subject caught up-close. Gilden also talks about making dynamic and energetic pictures, his opinion on ‘art gallery’ photographers, and his inspirations, which include postwar Japanese photography and his own life experiences.

Sofa Sessions are produced by the Martin Parr Foundation and filmed and edited by Alex Parkyn-Smith. Watch more episodes here.
