Magnum Emerging Writers in Residence

Magnum Photographers

As part of Magnum Photos’ recent Emerging Writers in Residence program, six early-career photography writers were invited to research and respond to a topic of their choosing in Magnum’s photographic archive.

Many experience limited access to photographic fields as a result of structural inequities. With this in mind, the course made a case for the importance of quality writing and visual literacy for the photography industry: based on the excellent standard of their work, submitted via an open application, six participants were selected to propose ideas.

Spanning analyses of the motifs and behaviours that appear throughout our cultures and politics, critical and personal responses to photographers’ works, as well as retracings of lost histories through images and how we collect them, these articles explore the ways that photographs tell stories, exercise power, and offer resistance.

The participating writers are: Rojda Yavuz,  Abira Hussein, Noor-e-Sehar Ali, Pelumi Odubanjo, Daniel Mebarek and Kaivalya Brewerton.

This project was made possible thanks to support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
