Bio

Rafał Milach was born in 1978 in Poland, and grew up during the collapse of the Soviet bloc. He studied graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, Poland, before “falling in love” with photography the first time he picked up a camera. He became a full member of Magnum Photos in 2023. Milach is currently a professor at the Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School in Katowice. His works have been widely exhibited in Poland and worldwide, and can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, the ING Polish Art Foundation, Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in Japan, and Brandts in Odense, Denmark.

Mentorship

Milach’s photography mentorship is designed to be an enriching and collaborative journey, emphasizing both personal and artistic growth. As the Magnum photographer puts it, “What I like most about teaching is a meeting and an exchange.” This philosophy underscores his approach, where mentorship is seen not merely as instruction but as a mutual learning experience.

Milach understands the complexities involved in conceptualizing work, selecting the appropriate visual language, and developing effective work and presentation strategies. With over ten years of practice and experience working with students, he is dedicated to creating an environment of inspiration and support. His mentorship aims to empower photographers to realize their personal long-term projects, fostering a community where ideas and creativity can flourish. Milach guides students through the challenges of their creative journeys, nurturing a critical awareness of the environments that influence their art.
