Description

Bio

Lorenzo Meloni, born in 1983, is an Italian photographer renowned for his vivid depictions of conflict and its repercussions on people and landscapes.

Adopting a historicist’s approach to his subjects, Meloni aims to challenge complex narratives around war by considering both past and contemporary social, political, and cultural contexts. His photographs encourage reflection on the recurring self-destructive patterns of human behavior throughout history and their devastating effects on both the environment and humanity.

Meloni has spent over a decade working in the Middle East and North Africa, dedicating himself to long-term projects. These include documenting Libya after the fall of Gaddafi, covering the country’s democratization processes, the proliferation of militias, and the smuggling of migrants.

He has covered significant 21st-century conflicts in Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria, as well as their impacts on neighboring Lebanon. Recently, he has been chronicling the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Meloni’s photographs are held in prestigious public and private collections, including the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Collection Banco Sabadell and the Incite project. His work has been exhibited and shown at festivals worldwide, including the Venice Biennale, Visa pour l’Image and Les Rencontres d’Arles.

His work has also been published in prominent international publications, including Time magazine, The Times, Le Monde, Vanity Fair and The Economist.

Mentorship

Meloni offers a mentorship program tailored for photographers who want to explore their own territory and cultural landscapes with the benefit of an outsider’s critical perspective. With a strong emphasis on history and its consequences on today’s people’s life, discussions will have an essential place in Lorenzo’s mentoring.

“I would like to meet someone who experiences photography as a life choice, with the pleasures and sacrifices that this can offer. I would like to discuss the ethics and languages of photography by looking at our work and that of other photographers to understand the processes behind , in order to develop creative approaches.” He says.
