Description

Bio

Jérôme Sessini, born in Vosges, France, in 1968, is a photographer renowned for his work in conflict zones and on pressing social issues. His assignments for international newspapers have taken him to some of the most volatile regions in the world, including Palestine, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Libya. Beyond the front lines, Sessini has also delved into social issues such as drug-related violence in Mexico and anti-government protests in Ukraine, demonstrating his commitment to covering stories of human struggle and resilience.

In 2016, Sessini documented the Kurdish Peshmerga offensive against ISIS in Bashiq and followed Iraqi forces as they advanced towards Mosul. The following year, he collaborated with Samrith Vaing in Cambodia, capturing the lives of indigenous minorities threatened by forced eviction. Since 2018, he has focused on the opioid crisis in the United States, creating intimate portraits of affected individuals and communities in Ohio and Philadelphia.

Sessini’s powerful images have been featured in prestigious publications like The New Yorker, Time, and Stern. His work has been exhibited globally in solo shows at venues such as the Rencontres d’Arles, Bibliothèque Nationale François-Mitterrand, French Ministry of Culture, International Center of Photography, and the Barbican.

Mentorship

Jérôme Sessini knows how being a photographer can be overwhelming and feels that discussions are key to developing both your mental and visual approach. “I like to share my own doubts with other photographers in order to try to find answers together.”

In his teaching, Jérôme will push your boundaries and make you explore your surroundings in a deeper way than usual. Using his own experience to help others, he is expecting you not to be afraid to confront yourself and your ideas as well as his. He says, “It’s important to confront my ideas with visions different from mine, so for me, mentoring must be a sharing and a reciprocal act.”
