Description

“The Gaze and the Interval” is Magnum Learn’s first workshop to use cinematic inspiration as a catalyst for creative exploration.

This workshop draws its inspiration from La Nouvelle Vague, also known as the French New Wave, and iconic films such as Jean-Luc Godard’s “À bout de Souffle” (“Breathless”), filmed on the streets of Paris.

Cristina de Middel and Bieke Depoorter invite you to embody, for the duration of this program, the spirit of the New Wave’s directors: going off-script, experimenting with your editing, and breaking down traditional photographic conventions.

As Cristina puts it, “Nouvelle Vague cinema often lives in the in-between: the pauses, the looks, the gestures. We want this workshop to focus on what happens between the actions as opposed to the actions themselves, with an emphasis on rhythm, absence, off-screen space, and emotional discontinuity.”

As preparation for the workshop, we ask you to watch at least two films before we begin: À Bout de Souffle (Jean-Luc Godard) and Jules and Jim (François Truffaut).

After watching them, note down any photographic ideas they inspire. These might include quick sketches, short scenarios, specific locations you’d like to revisit, or particular moods and atmospheres that resonate with you. You’re also welcome to begin taking photographs in response to these notes.

Please bring this material with you on the first day. It will help kick-start your workshop experience and will guide Bieke and Cristina as they support you during the shooting days.

“Four days to let go of the familiar and invite the unknown, so that we can try things we haven’t tried before—testing, improvising, and taking risks—with enough space for experiments, accidents, and detours, because I want us to embrace doubt and the freedom of not knowing what the work can become. I am excited to get to know you and your work. Please join us :).” adds Bieke.
