Alex Webb on Shanghai’s Streets

Magnum photographer Alex Webb spends 72 hours in Shanghai

Alex Webb

On the invitation of Huawei, Magnum photographer Alex Webb was recently tasked with shooting the streets of Shanghai in 72 hours. The catch? The photographer could only use a smartphone— the Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

From day to night, Webb stalked the streets capturing everything from sleeping commuters and neon, glowing cityscapes to the larger-than-average billboards lining the streets. Talking about his experience, Webb describes “I just came here really with an open sort of mind, just see what happens on the street with this new animal in my hand. It’s a very different process of photography, and quite frankly, using the Huawei phone yesterday for the first time, it was a new experience.”
