Description

Join us for a 5-day workshop with Newsha Tavakolian as part of our Inside>>Out program.

Designed for photographers whose practices blend documentary approaches with conceptual interventions, this workshop will challenge participants to reflect deeply on their practice, push their artistic boundaries, and explore new ways to tell their stories visually.

Tavakolian will guide students through experimenting with creative approaches to photography and strategies for strengthening narrative skills. If you are working on a personal project, a long-term story, or simply looking to expand your creative perspective, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to build on the idea that photography is not only about making better images, but about developing a personal way of seeing and communicating. Rather than focusing on technical perfection, you will be encouraged to question why you photograph and what you want to express through your work.

“It’s about pushing yourself to dig deeper into your feelings and your understanding of the world you’re living in,” says Tavakolian

A key part of Tavakolian’s teaching is creating an open, supportive environment where experimentation is encouraged, and failure is embraced as a positive part of the creative process. She believes that every photographer has a unique voice, and sees her role as helping them recognise, challenge, and strengthen their own styles.

Through individual mentoring, group discussions, and practical exercises designed to spark curiosity, participants will explore new approaches to visual production, refresh their creative strategies and gain confidence in making honest and distinctive long-term projects.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Be mentored by a Magnum photographer, Newsha Tavakolian
  • Break out of comfortable thinking patterns to dig deeper into your creativity
  • Receive honest and expert feedback on your work
  • Gain a deeper understanding of your visual language
  • Be part of an inspiring group and learn in a supportive and positive environment
  • Learn practical tools and increase your confidence as a creative visual storyteller

Inside>>Out workshops are open to photographers with a solid understanding of the medium, some experience working on stories rather than single images, and a keen interest in expanding their knowledge of photographic theory and practice during a fast-paced week.
