Oslo Negativ is the city-wide photography festival and a gathering point for all types of photography. For three weekends in October, we fill the National Gallery with documentary and art photography from photographers from Norway and abroad. We invite you to conversations, workshops and events that include reflection and humor, aesthetics and manipulation.
Afronauts, Cristina de Middel:
The 2012 series is inspired by Zambia’s little-known space program from 1964. With homemade costumes and simple sets, de Middel recreated the dream of a Zambian space adventure in staged, surreal photographs.
The series became her international breakthrough and established the working method for which she is known: documentary photography, fiction and archival material are combined into narratives that challenge what we perceive as reality.
Sleeping by the Mississippi, Alec Soth:
The series was created through Soth’s travels along the Mississippi River in the period 1999-2002.
The motifs move between portrait, landscape and interior, and the result is a depiction of an America where the everyday contains both vulnerability, longing and hope.
Since 2004, the series has been considered one of the most important in recent photographic history.
Alec Soth is known for an intuitive working method in which coincidences and encounters along the way play a central role.
