Description
Join Olivia Arthur for a 5-day workshop dedicated to portraiture as part of our Inside>>Out program.
For the second year in a row, Olivia invites participants to explore portraiture in its broadest sense. Over the course of five days, you’ll learn how to build a connection with your subject before taking their photograph, how to engage with strangers on the street, how to direct them to pose for you and most importantly, how portraiture can be a powerful tool to tell the larger story of a community, family, or neighborhood.
With a playful, encouraging approach, Olivia will inspire participants to explore their imagination by experimenting with shapes, lighting, and props in a makeshift studio created for the occasion.
By the end of the week, participants will have the skills and confidence to use portraiture as a meaningful storytelling tool.
Public talks by Magnum photographers and a public slideshow will be organized on the final evening as part of the broader Inside>>Out program.
“Olivia strongly supported us all in pushing ourselves beyond our comfort zones. She is a very good and inspiring teacher,” reflects a participant from last year’s edition of Inside>>Out.
In this workshop, you will:
- Build confidence in approaching and photographing strangers.
- Develop a deeper understanding of lighting techniques for portraiture.
- Learn how to establish a meaningful connection with your subjects before photographing them.
- Explore the use of portraiture to tell broader narratives about communities, families, or neighborhoods.
- Experiment with combining text — such as interviews, poetry, or diary entries — with portraits to add layers of meaning.
- Gain insights into working in a makeshift studio and adapting to various settings for portrait photography.
- Participate in one-to-one reviews with Olivia Arthur for personalized feedback and guidance.
- Engage in group discussions to receive diverse perspectives, learn from peers, and foster a sense of creative community.
Inside>>Out workshops are open to photographers with a solid understanding of the medium, some experience working on stories rather than single images, and a keen interest in expanding their knowledge of photographic theory and practice during a fast-paced week.
