Description

Join Antoine d’Agata in Yerevan and Alaverdi, Armenia to explore how historical battles over power and identity continue to echo in today’s cultural and social fabric.

You’ll spend the first two days of the workshop in the capital, Yerevan, before boarding a bus bound for Alaverdi with your fellow participants. Surrounded by mountains and 10th-century monasteries, including the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Haghpat and Sanahin, Alaverdi has a rich yet troubled history. Having been under Georgian and then Russian rule prior to Armenian independence, the town still reflects these influences in its atmosphere and architecture.

With four days of shooting alongside Antoine and daily group reviews, you’ll develop a photographic essay capturing contemporary Armenia and its intertwined history.

Public talks by Magnum photographers and a public slideshow will be organized on the final evening as part of the broader Inside>>Out program.

This workshop offers:

  • Personal guidance from Magnum photographer Antoine d’Agata
  • Insightful group critiques led by Antoine
  • Key tools for capturing complex atmospheres and layered narratives
  • Guidance on selecting and sequencing images to create a powerful body of work
  • A public presentation of your work

Inside>>Out workshops are open to photographers with a solid understanding of the medium, some experience working on stories rather than single images, and a keen interest in expanding their knowledge of photographic theory and practice during a fast-paced week.
