This exhibition celebrates the vibrant and immersive photographic world of Guy Le Querrec, one of Magnum Photos’ most distinctive voices. Through his lens, jazz becomes more than music—it becomes a way of seeing, a way of being.
For decades, Le Querrec followed the rhythms of jazz across continents and cultures, capturing intimate moments on stage and behind the scenes. His photographs don’t just document musicians—they improvise with them. He listens with his eyes, catching the fleeting gestures, the tension between silence and sound, the poetry of movement and expression.
As Le Querrec himself once wrote:
“Being jazz is above all a style of living, of letting chance guide one’s steps so as to catch a shooting star, a way of actively developing an imagination which always has room for improvisation and curiosity, which compels one to listen to others, to be open to them and to tell their story while bringing out one’s own poetry.”
In the spirit of this philosophy, the exhibition unfolds like a visual jam session—unexpected, alive, full of soul. Shot primarily in France, with sojourns in New York, Le Querrec’s images reveal not only the essence of jazz, but also the essential humanity that fuels it.
