Description

This selection of 120 works offers a revealing glimpse into the elusive and multifaceted oeuvre of German photographer Herbert List. Renowned for the sheer breadth of his practice, List worked across nearly every major photographic genre—architecture, still life, street photography, portraiture, documentation, and cataloguing.

Yet his work defies easy categorization. He skillfully blurred the boundaries between genres: architectural photographs evoke carefully composed still lifes or surreal dreamscapes; documentation of Greek sculptures and African artifacts approaches portraiture; and his studies of the classical male form hover between meticulously staged arrangements and spontaneous, intimate snapshots.

Through this nuanced interplay, List challenges our perceptions of photography itself—inviting us to reconsider the distinctions between art, documentation, and personal expression. This exhibition illuminates the richness and complexity of his vision, revealing a body of work that remains as enigmatic as it is captivating.
