Description

Opening Reception: Friday, October 3, 5pm – 7pm

Curated by Jennifer Tripp, MAGNUM: Silver Screen presents an intimate portrait of Hollywood’s golden age through the legendary photographers of Magnum Photos. Spanning the 1940s through 1980s, this collection of vintage and contemporary gelatin silver prints captures iconic stars—from Marlene Dietrich, Humphrey Bogart, Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe to James Dean, Sammy Davis, Jr., Jane Fonda, and Mikhail Baryshnikov—both on and off the silver screen.

Magnum’s photographers gained unprecedented access, living alongside these legends on film sets and within their private worlds. The resulting images reveal not just the carefully constructed personas that captivated audiences, but the vulnerable human beings behind the star power—their working methods, quiet contemplations, and unguarded moments.

Beyond the final published photographs, the exhibition also offers a unique window into the alchemy of analog photography itself. Through enlarged contact sheets and Master Printer Pablo Inirio’s extraordinary “Darkroom Print Maps”—test prints marked with his own notations and adjustments—visitors witness the meticulous craft behind each iconic image. These roadmaps reveal how the photographer’s vision transformed into timeless print, creating a multi-layered exploration where the magic of Hollywood meets the magic of the darkroom.

Featuring fine prints by Eve Arnold, Cornell Capa, Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt, Burt Glinn, Philippe Halsman, David Hurn, Dennis Stock (with additional works available for viewing upon request).
