Description
Explore the transformative possibilities of photography in this hands-on workshop with Yael Martínez.
In 2019, Martínez began physically intervening in his photographs by piercing his prints and backlighting them, creating images that shimmer with light bursting through the darkness. This intuitive process, both literal and symbolic, represents a shift from straightforward documentation to transformation as praxis. The results can be seen in his work Luciernagas.
Additionally, in a commission for the Magnum Foundation, Martínez experimented with collages to symbolize the layers of time, stones, dust, and structures that have built our present and our identity.
These techniques of physically altering your images will be at the core of this workshop in Philadelphia.
Developing or continuing a photographic essay of your choice, you will experiment with collage and intervention techniques to add emotional resonance to your story or to tap into a different way to convey your ideas.
This workshop encourages breaking free from traditional photographic boundaries. By engaging with both the physical and conceptual aspects of images, you’ll expand your creative outlook, discovering how intervention can transform meaning and reveal new dimensions in your work.
This workshop offers a chance to:
- Explore layering, cutting, piercing, and recombining images
- Experiment with backlighting and other physical interventions to transform prints
- Challenge conventional photographic formats and structures
- Develop playful and intuitive approaches to image-making
- Reflect on intention, symbolism, and the emotional impact of your interventions
