In 2006, The French Institute in Innsbruck, Austria made a curious discovery in its basement: sealed in two crates were 83 original photographs by eight Magnum photographers. Alongside the prints that are glued on colour panels, the original exhibition poster and introductory text were found inside.
Dating from an exhibition that toured between 1955 – 1956, these vintage prints document Magnum’s vision at the time when the agency was merely a project. “The face of time” (Gesicht der Zeit), which was the title for the exhibition that toured in five Austrian towns before disappearing, seems to be a perfect fitting, even more today than it was originally.
Participating photographers: Werner Bischof, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ernst Haas, Erich Lessing, Jean Marquis, Inge Morath and Marc Riboud.
