Description

Join Lorenzo Meloni in Paris for a 5-day workshop on the theme of A World in Color.

This new workshop format will use a selection of previously unseen images from the Magnum archive as inspiration for the photographs you will create throughout the week.

The project A World in Color is centered on the idea of Magnum photographers drawing inspiration from the work of their colleagues and creating a personal response to it. You can see Alec Soth’s response in Venice and Rafal Milach’s in Czechia.

Lorenzo Meloni will curate a selection of images taken in Paris by Magnum photographers, which will be shared with all participants upon registration. Using this previously unseen material as inspiration, each participant will create their own personal response to the selection.

To enhance both the learning and archival aspects of the workshop, we have invited Pierre Mohamed-Petit, Magnum’s Digital Production Manager in Paris, to lead a masterclass on digitizing and organizing an archive. He will demonstrate the technology used to digitize some of the color slides from the World in Color project.

This is a unique opportunity to work on a project in Paris from a fresh perspective—drawing inspiration from the Magnum archive while contributing your own voice to the many ways Paris has been photographed over the past century.

A World in Color is a project to digitize the agency’s color library archive, which has been dormant for decades.

Stowed away in the late 19th century Saint-Cyr fort are over 43,000 slide sheets, totaling approximately 650,000 color slides, dating from the 1950s to the early 2000s. Many of these images have remained — until now — unseen to the public eye, and untouched for over 20 years. With the help of Magnum’s Archive and Production teams, and the Fujifilm GFX 100 II medium-format digital camera, a selection of these exclusive images are finally being revealed to the public for the first time.

This workshop offers:

  • Guidance and creative development over a five-day intensive workshop
  • The experience of working in response to a Magnum curation
  • Group review sessions
  • Editing session
  • Digitazing and organize your archive: Masterclass led by Magnum’s Digital Production Manager

The workshop is open to photographers of all levels, from passionate amateurs to working professionals who want to further refine their skills in visual storytelling and gain valuable insights in archive management.
