Visions of the Aegean: A Photography Retreat Enri Canaj

Workshop

Ask Us Anything Session (online – 1 hour): Dates TBD – Introduction in details of the workshop schedule and round table discussion of participants’ project ideas moderated by Sofia Abechir, Magnum’s Education Coordinator.

Day One:

Objective: Get to know your mentor and peers’ approach to photography and define your project for the week.

AM: Introduction — Overview of the week led by Sofia Abechir.

Talk — Enri Canaj presents his work, followed by a Q&A session.

PM: Ideas Development Lab — Participants share a selection of past work and introduce their project ideas to Enri and their peers.

Day Two:

Objective: Get familiar with the island and start working on your project.

AM: Fieldwork — Participants begin working on their projects, either individually or in groups.

PM: Fieldwork continues.

LATE PM: Group review — Participants present a selection of images shot during the day and receive constructive feedback from their peers and mentor on composition, mood, and narrative potential.

Day Three:

Objective: Continue developing your project — you can use this day to travel around the island as the late pm session is not mandatory.

AM: Fieldwork continues.

PM: Fieldwork continues.

LATE PM: INFORMAL — Enri and Sofia will be available at the workshop space if participants want to show their work, need advice, or encounter any kind of issues.

Day Four:

Objective: Refine and develop your photographic voice.

AM: Group review— Participants present a selection of images captured beforehand and receive feedback from Enri and their peers to enhance their visual storytelling.

PM: Fieldwork —Participants continue working on their projects.

Day Five:

Objective: Create a global selection of the work produced by the group during the week.

AM: Fieldwork — Participants complete their projects.

PM: Group reviews – Enri Canaj selects the best images from each participant and, together with the group, curates a collective selection of the week’s work.

EVENING: Outdoors — Projection of the final selection with drinks.

A limited number of rooms are available at Enri’s house for €60 per night.

Participants interested in staying can select this option at checkout. Reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Enri Canaj was born in Tirana, Albania, in 1980. He spent his early childhood there before moving to Greece when the borders opened in 1991. He studied photography at the Leica Academy in Athens and became a full member of Magnum Photos in 2021. The same year, Canaj published his first monograph, Say Goodbye Before You Leave. He is based in Athens and covers stories in Greece and the Balkans.

Since 2008, Canaj has been a freelance photographer for major publications such as TIME LightBox, The New York Times Magazine, MSNBC Photography, Wall Street Journal, Vice, Financial Times, and Le Monde. He has received awards from the Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation, LUMIX Festival for Young Photojournalism, NEON Foundation, iMEdD and Stavros Niarchos Foundation, as well as the Philip Jones Griffiths Award.

• Full fees must be paid on prior to the start of the workshop. • Magnum Photos reserves the right to cancel groups with less than 9 participants. Students will be given a full refund. In the event of cancellation, students will be given at least 3 weeks advance notice. • Magnum Photos reserves the right to change or alter the program advertised. • Cancellations: Magnum will reimburse all the registration costs except for a 10% of the costs for administrative fee if you inform us of cancellation at least 90 days before the first day of the Workshop. Beyond this time limit, we will charge the following: 50% of the cost if cancelled between 89 and 60 days before the Workshop commences. 100% of the cost if cancelled less than 60 days before the Workshop commences.
