Workshop

Day 0:

Welcome drinks with participants, Magnum photographers and Magnum staff.

Day 1 — Monday

Objective: Set goals and explore playful photography approaches.

AM: Participants share a selection of their recent work and discuss the possibilities for humor, the uncanny, and personal expression in photography.

PM: Individual Shooting – Sabiha will give the participants exercises to observe and capture humorous or uncanny details. Participants will also start exploring personal themes for the week.

Day 2 — Tuesday

Objective: Explore humor and irony to enrich storytelling.

AM: Group reviews – Sabiha will review your images and discuss the framing, timing, and subtle comedic elements.

PM: Individual Shooting – Individually or in small groups, participants continue shooting and working on their projects.

Day 3 — Wednesday

Objective: Capture enigmatic, unexpected, and thought-provoking moments.

AM: Group reviews – Sabiha will review your images and discuss creating ambiguity, provoking curiosity, and emotional impact.

PM: Individual Shooting – Identify and photograph uncanny elements in familiar settings.

Day 4 — Thursday

Objective: Receive personalized guidance on your photographic project.

AM: One-to-one review to define the next steps of your project and strengthen your personal vision.* When not in a review session, other participants continue shooting their projects.

*A schedule will be sent to you one-week before the start of the workshop.

Day 5 — Friday

Objective: Create a selection of all the participants’ work for the night screening.

AM: Group reviews – Reviewing everyone’s work produced during the week, Sabiha Çimen will select the best images for the night screening.

PM: Participants are free to rest, visit the city.

Evening: Screening – Magnum photographers, the Learn staff and all participants will gather together to celebrate the end of the workshop and look at what has been produced throughout the week.

A $800 deposit is required at the time of registration.
The remaining fee can be paid in full or in three instalments.

Is there a selection process for application ?

The application process is operating on a first come first serve basis and participants can be accepted right up until the start of the workshop, depending on availability.

What does the fee cover?

The fee covers the workshop itself. It does not cover accommodation, travel to the workshop location, and meals.

Can I already book my travel and accommodation?

We recommend waiting until the workshop has the minimum number of participants before booking your trip. As soon as the workshop is confirmed, we will send out an email notification, at which point you can book your trip.

Is it possible to switch for another workshop after having paid the deposit?

Depending on availability, you can decide to join one of the other Inside>>Out workshops.

Am I experienced enough to join this Magnum workshop?

All participants are welcome at any stage in their practice, whether you are just starting out or an experienced professional.

Terms and Conditions

• Full fees must be paid on prior to the start of the workshop. • Magnum Photos reserves the right to cancel groups with less than 9 participants. Students will be given a full refund. In the event of cancellation, students will be given at least 3 weeks advance notice. • Magnum Photos reserves the right to change or alter the program advertised. • Cancellations: Magnum will reimburse all the registration costs except for a 10% of the costs for administrative fee if you inform us of cancellation at least 90 days before the first day of the Workshop. Beyond this time limit, we will charge the following: 50% of the cost if cancelled between 89 and 60 days before the Workshop commences. 100% of the cost if cancelled less than 60 days before the Workshop commences.

Sabiha Çimen was born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1986. She is a self-taught photographer, focusing on women, Islamic culture, portraiture, and still life. Çimen graduated from Istanbul Bilgi University with an undergraduate degree in international trade and finance, and a master’s degree in cultural studies.

In 2021, Çimen was honored with the Light Work Artist Residency. In 2020, she was named a W. Eugene Smith Fund recipient, was awarded the Canon Female Photojournalist Grant, and won second prize in the Long-Term Projects category at the World Press Photo Awards. In 2018, she won third prize in the PHmuseum Women Photographers Grant. For her debut book, Hafiz (2021), she received the Paris Photo/Aperture First PhotoBook Award.

Çimen joined Magnum Photos in 2020, became an associate member in 2022, and a full member in 2024. She lives between Istanbul and New York.
