Join Magnum photographer Yael Martínez on a 6-day immersive workshop in the Sacred Valley of Cusco in which participants will explore a variety of approximations to storytelling, both through photography and other visual languages.

Organized for the second year in a row, the workshop proposes an intimate experience of Peruvian culture, bridging the gap between local artists and traditions to inspire the development of a project which carefully considers the context in which it will be produced. It will take place during the Day of the Dead, an important cultural ceremony.

With the help of Yael Martínez, known for telling critical stories with unconventional approaches, the participants will develop new work in this challenging context, while questioning the very means through which they approach it – becoming familiar with issues surrounding:

Have a thoroughly planned and critically informed self directed body of photographic work

Maleza Casa Estudio

The workshop will take place at Maleza Casa Estudio, a multidisciplinary Art’s Centre in the heart of the Sacred Valley of Cusco dedicated to the dissemination and promotion of the arts through a rich program of workshops, seminars and symposiums which bring together artists from across the Valley and beyond. With a focus on photography, Maleza is home to a public photobook library, an exhibition space and artist studios.

Full fees must be paid on prior to the start of the workshop.
Magnum Photos reserves the right to cancel groups with less than 9 participants. Students will be given a full refund. In the event of cancellation, students will be given at least 3 weeks advance notice.
Magnum Photos reserves the right to change or alter the program advertised.
Cancellations: Magnum will reimburse all the registration costs except for a 10% of the costs for administrative fee, if you inform us of cancellation at least 90 days before the first day of the Workshop. Beyond this time limit, we will charge the following: 50% of the cost if cancelled between 89 and 60 days before the Workshop commences. 100% of the cost if cancelled less than 60 days before the Workshop commences.

Yael Martínez

Martínez’s work addresses fractured communities in his native Mexico. He often works symbolically to evoke a sense of emptiness, absence, and pain suffered by those affected by organized crime in the region. He is the recipient of the Eugene Smith Award 2019, was fellow of the Photography and Social Justice Program of The Magnum Foundation. He won the 2nd Prize of the World Press Photo contests 2019 in the category of long-term projects. Martínez was grantee of the Magnum Foundation in the grants: Emergency Fund and On Religion in 2016- 2017. His work has been featured in group shows in America, Europe, Africa and Asia. His work has been published by The Wall Street Journal, Blomberg News, New York Times Lens, Time, Vogue Italia, Vrij Nederland, and Aperture. Martínez joined Magnum as a Nominee in 2020, and became an Associate in 2022.
