Description

Magnum has a longstanding collaboration with Turkey, and with Istanbul in particular. The great Turkish photographer Ara Güler was a correspondent for Magnum since the 1950s with strong ties to the agency and his fellow photographers. For over seven decades, numerous Magnum photographers have visited Turkey, and fallen in love with the lively and
colorful city of Istanbul.

To celebrate the inauguration of Bulgur Palace, the municipality of Istanbul has invited Magnum to celebrate photography’s eminent role in the history of contemporary art forms.

Magnum in Istanbul offers a glimpse into the vast Magnum archive, exploring photographs from the second half of the 20th century to the present, offering a new and insightful perspective on the contribution of the agency to our collective visual memory.

In addition to the group presentation, the exhibition features a special focus on Magnum’s Turkish photographer, Emin Özmen, who joined Magnum in 2017. A citizen of Istanbul, Emin Özmen has documented “his” city over decades. His vision on Istanbul provides the local component alongside the global narratives of his Magnum colleagues.
