“Two Alligators Talking is part of a large body of work on masquerade costumes from Jacmel Kanaval, Haiti 1994–2014, part of which is included in Maske (Aperture, 20
(...) 16). Kanaval troupes in Jacmel, Haiti, vary greatly in size, from several hundred members to just one individual, and a single troupe can include many different figures. Some wear large papier-mâché heads that satirize local political figures; some invent fanciful figures and animals, while others perform narrative tales, often about slaves who escape masters, or tricksters who elude authority.”
