Lindokuhle Sobekwa Ziyanda's Clothing. Thokoza, Johannesburg, South Africa. 2014
“This work is from a series about my sister, Ziyanda. I began this project after finding a family portrait in which her face had been (...)
cut out. She was a secretive, rebellious and rough presence in my life. The day she disappeared, she was chasing me, and I was hit by a car. She only returned a decade later, suffering from illness. By that time, I had become a photographer and realized my family had no pictures of her. One day I saw this beautiful light coming in through the window, shining on her face. I lifted up the camera to catch the moment and she shot me an evil look and said, ‘Stop! If you take that picture I’m going to kill you!’ So I lowered my camera. I still wish I had taken the shot.”
