Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao | Aperture Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. New York. 2012.
“Born and raised in Taiwan, I made the great journey to New York in the late 1990s, and over the past 12 years I’ve been focused on making picture
(...) s that describe the city. I am constantly awed by the complexity of New York’s communities, the harmony in which so many people of distinct backgrounds are able to live together, as well as the city’s light and physicality. Many of my New York pictures are landscapes—with an enormous amount of detail—conceived to be presented as large-scale images. I shoot all my work with either an 8-x-10 film camera, or high-end medium-format cameras. The process involves shooting multiple frames—sometimes over many hours—before stitching them together digitally to make a single picture. The Macy’s parade picture comes out of more than 80 individual frames shot over 3 hours, and is focused on a smaller slice of New York than many of my pictures. Everything that you see in the picture happened, but it didn’t all happen at the same time.”
