left and returned home to Kabkabiya. When we arrived, we found that a shell had hit our house, and everyone had left. Our mother, father, siblings, and entire family were gone. It was just my sister and me.
We left Kabkabiya and headed here because we heard our family might be in Kiryandongo camp. Along the way, we worked wherever we could to collect some money for bus tickets to reach the next town. We faced many hardships on the road before finally arriving here at the camp in Kiryandongo about two weeks ago.
When we got here, we couldn’t find our family. We were alone, with no shelter or anything. Amani found us and brought us to her home, where she gave us a place to stay with her” — Raja. Kiryandongo, Uganda. September 23, 2024.

parked inside the house. The war has separated me from my family, and this is my longest time I’ve been apart from them, especially from my father since day one of the war. He’s a military officer, and even until now, I can only get in touch with him sometimes because of the network. It’s tough, and on top of that, the rest of my family is constantly moving from one place to another. I’m worried about them and their safety.
Currently, the future is unclear. It’s like starting from zero again; all I worked for is gone. I’m trying to build a life here or somewhere else, but the moment the war ends, I’ll return immediately to start over there" — Mujahid. Nairobi, Kenya. September 20, 2024. © Salih Basheer / Magnum Photos
