In November of 1971, the San Francisco-based theatrical group The Cockettes made their New York debut as part of a three-week residency at the Anderson Theatre. The hype surrounding the groups’ arrival spread rapidly with a list celebrities eager to catch the troupe’s live show that already had become legendary on the West Coast. The opening night was, famously, a disaster due to the improvised nature of the performance that seemingly did not translate to a West Coast audience. Soon after, the group split, spawning many successful solo careers including that of ex-member and disco pioneer Sylvester.
