Marilyn Silverstone USA. 1955.
“Marilyn was one of the first women to join Magnum and her photographs graced the cover of Life and other publications. Her life was full of unpredictable turns and events.
This quie (...)
t and evocative photograph was shot in 1955 when she first started working as a professional photographer in New York City. Three years later, she was in India, where she would continue to live for 14 years, feeling at home with its people, society, and culture.
Marilyn’s life took another unexpected turn when she met her spiritual teacher and, in 1977, was ordained as a Buddhist nun. She moved to Nepal and spent the next two decades dedicated to Buddhist practice and her Tibetan teachers, and championing the cause of women in Buddhism.
Her uniquely direct, straightforward, and down-to-earth character won the trust of her subjects: from queens, to farmers, to hard-boiled politicians. Her later work featured very different subjects than the boy in this photo, but they all engendered a sense of intimacy and empathy.”
