Description

Bio

Chien-Chi Chang, born in Taiwan in 1961, began his career as a photojournalist at the Seattle Times in 1991. For decades, he has photographed the bifurcated lives of Chinese immigrants in New York and their families back home in Fujian.

His project, “China Town,” was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2009 and the International Center of Photography in 2012. In recent years, Chang has incorporated sound and moving images into his museum exhibitions, enriching his narratives. “Still images can be moving, and moving images can be still,” he says. “Both meet within a soundscape.”

Chang has documented numerous individuals in states of fearful uncertainty: internally displaced Rohingya in Myanmar, the European refugee crisis, the war in Ukraine, Hong Kong democracy activists, and North Korean defectors escaping through China and Laos to Thailand and South Korea.

Mentorship

Chien-Chi Chang is interested in working with several mediums to achieve a project. “If you’re interested in working with both still and moving images to expand your storytelling, my experience of crafting 22 videos will help challenge you,” he says.

As Chang’s photography and films delve into the abstract concepts of alienation and connection, he likes to push people’s boundaries to enhance their way of telling personal stories. With him as a tutor, you will explore contrasting themes linked to your project and learn how to understand ties that bind individuals. To him, “the end result dictates how a project is pursued.”
