Description

Magnum Photos is proud to partner with Daken Art to deliver two workshops with Magnum photographers Cristina de Middel and Newsha Tavakolian in Shenzhen, China between November 21–25, 2023.

Join one of the workshops to receive guidance on your photographic style, develop a distinctive approach to your subject and work in a group setting with others. Participants of both workshops will come together on the first day for lectures on visual storytelling by De Middel and Tavakolian. The following four days, the participants will be split into groups and will receive feedback on their work in group portfolio reviews.

In the workshop with Critisna de Middel, you will work on a creative assignment while breaking down the boundaries between documentary and conceptual photography. Playing with the concept of reality and the photographer’s capacity to visually reinvent the world around them, this workshop seeks to push participants outside their comfort zone photographically while investigating photography’s ambiguous relationship to truth. The last day of the workshop will explore editing and sequencing strategies on how to create a project which can be published in a book format or curated in an exhibition.

In the workshop with Newsha Tavakolian, you will explore working intuitively to forge deeper personal connections with your topics and subjects through discussions and group crits. You will learn how to shoot from your heart, creating more meaningful images by listening to your intuition, as opposed to what you believe others want to see. You will be asked to create new work on a daily basis, and Tavakolian will be on hand to review your work, offering feedback, support, and advice.
