Are you about to embark on a personal photographic project and would like to review your ideas and approach with an expert? Do you have a long term project that you need help editing and sequencing? Are you a mid-career photographer struggling to figure out your photographic vision or where you are going next with your career?

This online portfolio review will help photographers identify their next step — from finding your photographic voice, to the process of discovering and making a long-term project that you’re passionate about, to practical advice on getting your work seen by the right people.

Each Magnum photographer will see 10 photographers only during this two-day event. Places will be allocated based on your application. Applications are free. The deadline for applications is September 16th. Applicants will receive an answer to their application by September 17th, 2020. The price of the online portfolio review is $350 (incl. tax) to be paid on acceptance of the application. The offer includes a “Preparing for a Portfolio Review” presentation, a 60 minutes one-to-one online portfolio review. We will do our best to accommodate your timezone and schedule.

“I’m interested in seeing projects that speak to a photographer’s unique vision and ideas—the depth of the work is more important than breadth. We will explore visual narratives both in terms of what is happening inside an individual frame, but also review how images relate within a sequence and a series.

Context is crucial, and I’m curious how it informs your projects. Is your work generated from a reciprocal relationship to the subject of the photographs? Are you creating images from your personal point of view? 

I will also ask photographers what form they imagine a project taking and who it is for. Is this story best told on pages or on walls, in museums or public space? Knowing the ideal end result—magazine, book, installation, or otherwise—will help us discuss the process.” – Susan Meiselas

 

About your reviewer

Susan Meiselas received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and her M.A. in visual education from Harvard University. Her first major photographic essay focused on the lives of women doing striptease at New England country fairs. She photographed the carnivals during three consecutive summers while teaching photography in the New York public schools. Carnival Strippers was published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in 1976. A selection was installed at the Whitney Museum of Art in June 2000. The original book was revised and reprinted by the Whitney Museum and Steidl Verlag in 2003.  Meiselas joined Magnum Photos in 1976 and has worked as a freelance photographer since then. She is best known for her coverage of the insurrection in Nicaragua and her documentation of human rights issues in Latin America, which were published widely throughout the world. In 1981, Pantheon published her second monograph, Nicaragua: June 1978 – July 1979 which was reprinted by Aperture, fall 2008.
