Description

Join Magnum photographer Carl De Keyzer for a five-week online workshop focused on developing a photography project rooted in a specific place. The workshop will take place from November 7 to December 5, 2023.

Throughout this 5-week program, participants will engage in weekly shooting assignments and constrictive feedback sessions. Whether you are currently pursuing a long-term project or seeking to start from scratch, this workshop welcomes photographers at all stages of their career eager to produce new, compelling work.

In addition to offering individual feedback, Carl De Keyzer will share insights into his own photographic journey through a series of lectures. Topics covered will include the art of editing and sequencing, as well as transforming fleeting ideas into tangible and cohesive photographic projects.

Under De Keyzer’s guidance, you will be asked to develop  a personal project in a particular location. Much of De Keyzer’s photography work focuses on power structures, particularly waning political powers on the verge of collapse in various locations across the globe. Through his experience in the field — working on long term projects which explored daily life in the former USSR, North Korea, Congo, Cuba and USA —he will offer valuable insight into crafting a narrative in a region of your choice.

While working on a new project, I always aim to choose a different angle which eventually ends up influencing the concept for a whole new book. I call it my ‘mantra’ that I keep running in my head with each trip. It makes it easier to recognize possible situations that could lead to a possible image candidate for the project. In this workshop, I will help and guide you to develop your own ‘mantra’ when embarking on a new photography series.”  —Carl De Keyzer

The workshop is open to 12 photographers. Participants are encouraged to work locally around the place of their residence.
