Description

Magnum is pleased to present the first UK solo exhibition of South African artist, Lindokuhle Sobekwa. This is Sobekwa’s first installation with Magnum Gallery, and presents selected works from several different projects, including Daleside, Nyaope, Ezilalini (The Country) and I carry Her photo with Me.

Through Sobekwa’s lens emerges a portrait of contemporary life in the townships and surrounding regions of Johannesburg, charged variously with the compelling realities of poverty, addiction, family, play, trauma and work in post-apartheid South Africa. His images follow in the documentary tradition of photographers such as Ernest Cole and Santu Mofokeng, celebrating the essential humanity of historically segregated communities, whilst remaining uniquely intimate in their ability to capture quiet moments of joy, grief, rest; and in describing Sobekwa’s own lived experience.

Born in Katlehong, Johannesburg in 1995, Sobekwa was awarded a scholarship to study at the Market Photo Workshop in 2015. In 2017 he was selected by the Magnum Foundation for Photography and Social Justice to develop the project I carry Her photo with Me, and in 2021 he completed a residency at A4 Foundation in Cape Town. Sobekwa became a full member of Magnum Photos in 2022, and was named inaugural recipient of the John Kobal Foundation Fellowship, in partnership with Tate, in 2023.
