Description

Book now for Magnum’s mentorship program, designed for visual storytellers and artists seeking in-depth guidance on a project.

Are you about to embark on a personal photographic project and looking for feedback on your edits, ideas and approach? Do you have a long-term project that you need a fresh perspective on to identify underlying themes? Are you interested in working with someone who will get to know you and help elevate your vision for your body of work?

Through multiple interactive online sessions, mentorships with Magnum photographers will help guide you through long-term or personal projects. Magnum photographers will guide their mentees on all aspects of the creative process: from concept development, and editing and sequencing, to the process of discovering and making a long-term project that you’re passionate about, to practical advice on photographing in the field.

This mentorship provides an opportunity to work one-on-one with a Magnum photographer at your own pace over the course of several months.

A series of 8 online photography mentoring sessions lasting one hour each, the program will be organized over the course of three to six months, depending on your preferences and the areas personal to you that require development.

This workshop offers:

  • Long term guidance on technical, ethical, theoretical and aesthetic issues
  • Ideas Development
  • Editing and Sequencing
  • Workflow
  • Output and presentation

Schedule:

Email in advance to schedule sessions with your mentor.

Schedule is subject to the Magnum photographer’s availability.

I’ll offer guidance and perspective for photographers who feel stuck either in their editing or creative process, and aim to provide an expanded understanding of documentary for open-minded creators.

Cristina de Middel

About your mentor

Cristina de Middel investigates photography’s ambiguous relationship to truth. Blending documentary and conceptual photographic practices, she plays with reconstructions and archetypes in order to build a more layered understanding of the subjects she approaches. Working from the premise that mass media is reducing our real understanding of the world we live in, De Middel responds to an urgency to re-imagine tired aesthetic tropes and insert opinion in place of facts. Her impulse for an unconventional angle developed after a 10-year career as a photojournalist when De Middel stepped outside of straight documentary and produced the acclaimed series The Afronauts (2012). It explored the history of a failed space program in Zambia in the 1960s through staged reenactments of obscure narratives, challenging the traditional depiction of the African continent.
De Middel’s ongoing project Gentleman’s Club (which began in Rio de Janeiro in 2015 and has now expanded to every continent around the globe bar Australasia) focuses on prostitution’s less documented side: the male clients. Her intimate portraits of these men subvert the paradigms of the status quo to provide new sources of insight and understanding. As well as her acclaimed personal projects, De Middel has worked on commission for clients including The Nobel Peace Foundation, Christian Dior, Vanity Fair USA, Vogue USA and FC Barcelona. De Middel was born in Spain and is based between Mexico and Brazil.
