The corner of 125th and Lexington is a spot that Khalik Allah has returned to many times throughout his career. First drawn to Harlem as a teenager, Allah has since come to know the intersection and its characters intimately. A thoroughfare for the city, it provides both passage and meeting point for the incredible array of people who live in the area. Where some might see obstacles to be avoided in the form of the city’s more downtrodden residents, Allah affirms: “All I see is light.” Speaking of the “125th & Lexington” series in general, he says: “I am shooting at nighttime in a black neighbourhood. Those are two things people are afraid of. I’m trying to turn that on its head and show that there is nothing to fear.”
