Description

The many hammams of Turkey have deep roots in the country’s religious culture. With regular ablutions forming a tenet of Islamic practice, these hammams are often visited before prayer but provide as much opportunity for socialising and repose as they do for bathing. In a series of photographs taken in the Cemberlitas Hammam, one of the oldest baths in Istanbul, Sabiha Çimen offers an intimate portrait of its visitors as they enjoy a retreat from the city’s noise. Çimen was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1986. She is a self-taught photographer, whose work has focused on women, Islamic culture, portraiture and still life.
