Stuart Franklin’s documentation of the mass protest in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989 was iconic and far-reaching. Hundreds of student protesters were killed when they clashed with the military after a lengthy standoff.

This contact sheet contains protestors standing together in opposition to a mass of tanks, before civilians are seen fleeing. As tanks approach, one civilian, known as the “Tank Man” stood defiantly in front of a column of tanks.

Stuart Franklin joined Magnum Photos in 1985.
