Description

Wayne Miller became a member of in 1958. By this time he had already received two Guggenheim fellowships to photograph African-Americans in the northern United States. Some of these images were brought together in Chicago’s South Side, published retrospectively in 2002. This photograph of a strike captain, where Miller captures his subject from below, creates a heroic image out of calm defiance.
