“In November 1931, Wanda Booghaart, a student at Kansas University, Lawrence, was photographed depicting 'Miss D
(...) epression’ at the annual ’All University’ party. The dean of women had advised the students to select economical costumes for the occasion in view of the Depression. The image of Booghaart’s prize-winning costume was published in newspapers across the country, including The Evening Independent, Massillon, Ohio; New Castle, Pennsylvania, News; the Salem, Ohio, News; Nevada State Journal, Reno, Nevada; Shamokin News Dispatch, Shamokin, Pennsylvania; and The Philadelphia Inquirer.
“For years I’ve had this picture of ‘Miss Depression’ pinned on my wall as inspiration. As a response to the situation we faced in the spring of 2020, I made a set of 14 images with 14 different sashes with the words contagion, apprehension, isolation, digitization, termination, stratification, recession, depression, ruination, destitution, compassion, conviction, organization, and solidarity. Each image appeared on Instagram linked to an article in The New York Times that responded to the word.”
