C and So competing for the Oscar, Second Tip, Bangkok, 1992.
“The transgender movement has been a crucial part of the ongoing street protests. I feel lucky to have lived long enough to have witne (...)
ssed this sea change in visibility and acceptance of Trans people in our culture. In the early ’90s, I traveled to Bangkok to photograph the world of queens known as ‘ladyboys.’ Second Tip was their home and sanctuary. Every week, they held lavishly produced beauty contests, wearing showgirl costumes and lip-synching to Madonna. I wonder how today’s movement would have affected their lives.”

“P.A.I.N. is the activist group I started, focused on the Sackler family, whose pharmaceutical company, Purdue Pharma, developed and pushed OxyContin, igniting the Opioid Epidemic. We expose the Sacklers’ toxic philanthropy through direct action in museums and court intervention. As their bankruptcy case comes to a close, we’re pushing hard against the court allowing them to escape accountability, as they always have. We continue to address the overdose crisis by working with groups fighting for Harm Reduction and to end the Drug War.”
