Matthew Pillsbury | Aperture The Women’s March on Washington. Saturday, January 21, 2017.
“After the election I was left depressed, questioning the role photography could play going forward when so many of our rights and ou
(...) r health seemed immediately threatened. When I heard of the Women’s March on Washington I knew that I wanted to photograph it. I reached out to the New York Times Magazine which sent me on their behalf. It was an amazing experience. Seeing so many people sharing my concerns and anxieties let me know I was not alone in a way that gave me strength to go forward. Moreover, the reaction my images received reaffirmed to me the importance of photography–not only in documenting such moments but also in providing a space for people to reflect on their own experiences and what it meant for them.”
The proceeds of this sale will be donated to Planned Parenthood of New York City, in honor of my grandmother Eleanor Bellow Pillsbury who was president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America."
