Peter Marlow USS Kearsarge. Balkans War. 1999.
“As Europeans, we thought war was a thing that occurred elsewhere in the world–that our world was intelligent, wise, the grand master of diplomacy, of peace. It w
(...) as unthinkable that war would occur on the doorstep of Europe and that we were able to be so close. Which made it important to be close.
The USS Kearsarge itself was an amphibious assault ship upon which embedded journalists could observe the conflict first hand. Photographers were welcomed by the Americans, but they were quartered directly under the flight deck. With the ship in 24-hour operation, it was not the most peaceful place to be.
This picture was taken of the elite Marine Corps specialized platoon of 'Force Recon,’ trained SAS-style to operate behind enemy lines, during target practice on the flight deck elevator, with small arms.”
