“I was in the Orkney Islands, on the Hoy Sound, when I took this picture. The Hoy Sound has some of the biggest seas in the U.K. I wanted to photograph t
(...) his wave energy converter, a turbine of sorts, that harnesses wave power into energy. My assistant and I were on a rib, owned and operated by the coast guards. I was determined to shoot the machine head-on, with a Leica monochrome camera, and a 50mm lens. It was surprisingly difficult to get the boat to the right angle, especially given the condition of the seas. As the rib went up and down, my assistant held onto my life jacket while I photographed. The trick was to spend enough time on the water to figure out how to get close enough. I wanted to get a sense of proximity, power and light. As the machine surfaced, it looked very much like something that belonged to the sea.”
