Temples of Stone was created as part of Magnum Retold, a new series in celebration of Magnum Photos’ 70th anniversary. Current Magnum photographers have been asked to identify an archival photo-story that inspired them and use it as a starting point for their own contemporary story. The series, supported by Leica UK, celebrates the powerful legacy of documentary storytelling that Magnum has delivered from its earliest photographers right through to present day.

With his own vision, Stuart Franklin chose to reflect on the North Africa travels of legendary photographer and founding member of Magnum Photos, George Rodger, as he travelled across North Africa in 1957; a dream world of archaeology with human and natural forms chiselled out of the desert, weathered statues and rock buttresses. The exhibition promises to showcase a thoughtful and touching tribute to George Rodger and the landscapes of Egypt and Morocco.
