Richard Kalvar’s ‘Earthlings’ in Aachen
The quirks of the human condition are captured in this exhibition featuring the work of Richard Kalvar
Richard Kalvar’s seminal body of work ‘Earthlings’ captures the humanity and the humour of the human condition. This autumn, it features in an exhibition in Aachen, Germany.
“Richard Kalvar’s photography is unceremonious; it enters without knocking. Intrusive by nature, it ignores respectful bows and conventions. Its savagery tears away what familiarity masks, what daily routine hides, what habits conceal, and what everyday staging veils and withholds. In this paean to the bewitching power of the eye, the invisible man continues to play games with reality, with the frozen, comic violence of fake dramas. Yet hunting for big game holds no secret for him. What he likes, in the end, is the pleasure of being free to act without thinking. The photographer cultivates—and therein lies his art—the instant of seeing.”
