See the streets of Hong Kong through the eyes of new Magnum nominee Matt Stuart

Magnum Photos is proud to announce our first Masterclass forming part of our 70th anniversary program in Hong Kong with new nominee Matt Stuart, who will teach students about his photographic practice, sharing his own experience and the principles that have guided his career.

During this intensive three days street photography workshop, Matt will take students out on the street and pass on his tips and tricks on capturing the extraordinary in the everyday. The group will then meet in the afternoons to share feedback and discuss ways to improve technique and imagery. The course will include  classroom-based lessons and a shooting workshop, combining lectures, technique, critique and editing.

"Buy a good pair of comfortable shoes, have a camera around your neck at all times, keep your elbows in, be patient, optimistic and don’t forget to smile"

- Matt Stuart

This workshop will be held at the Hong Kong Arts Centre from March 24th to 26th, 2017. It caters for intermediate to experienced photographers. Students must have a good knowledge of their camera and bring 10 photos to class for review (jpegs or prints). Students will be asked to bring their own laptop and cameras along with a USB stick. Only digital work will be reviewed during the course.

Participants will be automatically offered some reserved spaces for the exclusive Magnum Photos talk organized on March 26th at 3.30pm at the Hong Kong Arts Centre.

Matt Stuart

Born in 1974, Matt Stuart was raised in the leafy suburbs of Harrow, North West London. He admits to a less than distinguished school career, but was called upon aged 11 to play a trumpet solo in front of the Queen Mother. Her Majesty’s reaction is not recorded.

A little later, in 1986, Matt discovered skateboarding after watching the film “Back to the Future”. Skating occupied his every waking moment until 1994, when he looked up from the half-pipe and noticed that girls had got a lot more interesting. He also indulged in a brief, ill-advised affair with Kung Funses. In case a workshop is cancelled, we recommend that you buy refundable air tickets and/or travel insurance.

Travel and Accommodation

Participants are expected to make their own arrangements regarding travel and accommodation; a list of suitable accommodation options will be provided to successful candidates.

Please ensure you have the necessary travel documents & relevant visas in order to attend the event. Magnum Photos can provide letters of support where necessary.

Matt’s father, keenly aware that his son would never be the next Bruce Lee, introduced him to photography, handing over books by Robert Frank & Henri Cartier-Bresson. Ever since then, photography has been Matt’s overriding passion, although he’s still quite interested in skateboards and girls. (But thankfully not Kung Fu).
